Valva
Villa d'Ayala extends over 17 hectares, characterised by picturesque gardens and a series of sculptures portraying the virtues and the arts. This artistic heritage dates back to the eighteenth century, but it was in 1867 that this Villa obtained the current splendour, thanks to the Marquise Francesco d'Ayala-Valva. The villa is entirely surrounded by ancient walls.
The entrance is located inside a small tower characterised by a neo-Gothic door surmounted by Ghibelline battlements. On the right side of the entrance it is possible to access the "Madonna di Filermo Chapel", where every year the order of the Knights of Malta celebrates a commemorative Mass. The "Coffee house" boasts a neo-Gothic portico with six arches showing countrywomen, known as "Pacchiane", dressed in typical costumes of the Basilicata region. At the end of the path there is a small tower dominated by a marble statue of Hercules. Villa d'Ayala is a magic place, full of natural beauty and unique architecture: the neoclassical amphitheatre with hedges, stages and marble male/female busts; the underground road, which leads to the cave where the statue of the Greek divinity Volcano is situated; the crenelated castle, located in the area of the old baronial palace. The centenary trees, the botanical gardens with different types of floral patterns, the cherry and laurel paths, the Italian and English gardens, make the scenery luxuriant and similar to an artistic maze.
Opening hours: Saturday, Sunday, holidays always open 9.30-12.00 / 16.00-18.30
